Invitation From Council President

Some years ago the City of Los Angeles embarked on a new and exciting experiment in bringing local government even closer to the people – Neighborhood Councils representing the many diverse and vast neighborhoods and communities of this great City of the Angels.

So democracy was re-invented once again.

Our local community – the Greater Valley Glen community represents over 45,000 people – not counting those Stakeholders who work or participate in organizations or attend school or churches in the Greater Valley Glen Community – a fair bit more than a neighborhood and much more like a small City

Thus, the slogan: YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD – OUR COMMUNITY.

The Greater Valley Glen Council constantly is interacting with City officials, departments, agencies and numerous other public officials and governmental bodies so as to achieve a safer, better and cleaner environment for our Stakeholders. From land use decisions (ie: variances and conditional use permits to policing and other first responder services to neighborhood watches) – WE HAVE OUR SAY – and our say is an effective voice on behalf of our Greater Valley Glen community.

Now we need to hear YOU – to give voice to your concerns.

Please participate…please be
involved…please let us hear your say…so that the GVGC can give voice to every voice in Greater Valley Glen.

The GVGC is here.

Now we need to hear from YOU!

VALLEY GLEN COMMUNITY PARK UPDATE

Recent news…Greater Valley Glen Council obtains approximately $1,300,000 for Parks in our Valley Glen Community....

VALLEY GLEN COMMUNITY PARK...your neighborhood council at work for you and your community.... Through the efforts of the Greater Valley Glen Council which initiated and paid for 2 grant application for improvements at our Valley Glen Community Park and Laurel Grove Park via the Prop K for Kids ...our GVGC Grant was approved to place playground equipment, walking exercise track and rustic fencing at Valley Glen Community Park is moving quite well. Add to this the GVGC support for a new smart irrigation system at Laurel Grove Park. IT ALMOST IS FINISHED! SOON!

Valley Glen in now benefiting with over $1,300,000 being spent on our main Valley Glen parks. The bulk of the funding is devoted to Valley Glen Community Park for playground equipment in keeping with the rustic nature of the park and along lines desired by the neighborhood surrounding the Park. The decorative fencing also will be similar - rustic - like the playground and the addition of an exercise track.
The main part of the project is nearly completed with the Exercise Track and Playground Equipment nearly completed and expect the Community Dedication sometime in the next month or so. See approved Playground plans below or visit and see for yourself...

New trees, new benches and tables, new seeding - Our Park is starting to take shape! Fencing is promised but in discussion as to type and location. The Smart Irrigation System should be installed by next April 2013 .

VICTORY BOULEVARD AND WHITSETT MEDIANS

The GVGC is trying to address the medians at Victory Boulevard and Whitsett Avenue. Our initial effort is to locate possible grants available to improve and re-landscape these medians. They are a terrible eyesore to the surrounding neighborhoods and to the Community as a whole. Hopefully the new effort the the GVGC will bear fruit and allow us to make these medians an attractive improvement to our community. Please note that only – and I do mean only the GVGC has sought to improve and maintain these medians with no help whatsoever. It would be of assistance if the neighborhoods surrounding these medians pitched in for the effort.

So far, the GVGC has been paying an outside crew to clean up the medians on a monthly basis but that crew is no longer available. The GVGC is trying to locate another crew to assist in the effort.
In the long run, hopefully the GVGC will find grant money to re-landscape these medians. The cost is estimated in the 100’s of thousand dollars to clean and re-landscape.

More to come.

VALLEY COLLEGE TREES ALONG BURBANK BOULEVARD

Regarding the tree removal along Burbank Boulevard adjacent to Valley College earlier this year, the first order will be repairing the sidewalk and parking area and then replacing the trees with beautiful drought tolerant 24" & 36" gallon (Casuarina Stricta) trees along the Burbank Blvd. stretch.

September 12, 2012

Los Angeles Valley College has been recently named as a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota of North America. We are the first community college in California, and the first college campus in the City of Los Angeles to receive this distinction.

To celebrate this unique achievement, we are hosting a tree planting event on Monday, October 15 at 4 p.m. at the outdoor concrete stage between our Art and Theater Arts buildings.

Please join Valley College students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members as we plant 30 trees on campus in celebration of Valley College’s commitment to developing and maintaining its healthy urban forest. We will be joined by members from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), Arbor Day, Toyota and other community leaders.

This event is a component of the Tree Campus USA program, which is funded by Toyota and administered by the non-profit Arbor Day Foundation. A tree-planting celebration, which is co-hosted by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota, will also be held at the event to commemorate Valley College on this achievement.
Tree Campus USA recognizes the best practices in campus forestry throughout the United States. The goal of the program is to honor college campuses and leaders of their surrounding communities for promoting healthy urban forest management and engaging the campus community in environmental stewardship.

I hope that you will be able to join us on this exciting day! Whether you help plant trees or simply attend to show your appreciation for Valley College’s beautiful campus, we would love to welcome you to our event. For more information on our tree plan go to www.lavc.edu/trees.

Sincerely,

A. Susan Carleo - President - Los Angeles Valley College
